It's Pre Run Time
Before we could even think of racing, we had to prepare. There were six
sections in all.  Gordon Clark started and was to change with Rob Mendenhall
at San Felipe.  Then Rob would speed down to Bay of LA and change with
Anthony Brooks.  Anthony would then race more than 170 miles and change
with Curt Gerritson in San Ignacio.  Curt would carry the baton to Laredo
where Joel Jackson was to get on and challenge perhaps the most difficult
part of the course.  Between Mission San Javier and Insurgentes, there were
more than 60 water crossings, some 4-5 feet deep.  The last ten miles
became a nightmare after two weeks of practice, becoming continuous silt
averaging 2-3 feet deep.  During Joel's night practice, his bike became water
logged.  Johnny Campbell stopped and helped him clear the air cleaner and
carburetor.  After 20 minutes he got restarted.

My section, from Insurgentes to La Paz, was nearly 200 miles, the longest leg.
I pre-ran it twice, once at night.  The silt sections became worse by the hour
as more trucks passed through.  The silt 10 miles from Punto Conejo was
nearly impassable iin spots, requiring me to find lines around.  Spending an
afternoon before race day, I figured it out and it was not too bad.  I was really
ready.
